Using OLE DB (MCP-4024) | |
Abstract |
Object Linking and Embedding for Data Bases (OLE DB) is one of the
newer enablers for open access to data managed by the MCP Enterprise
Database Server (DMSII) facility. OLE DB is a Microsoft technology
implemented by Unisys for the ClearPath MCP. It provides a powerful
and efficient mechanism for inquiry and update of data bases in the
MCP environment from external client systems, particularly Microsoft
Windows systems.
The speaker will discuss the capabilities and features of the OLE DB Provider for DMSII, compare OLE DB capabilities to those of ODBC, briefly review installation and configuration of the software, highlight special considerations in dealing with DMSII data structures, and describe how the OLE DB Provider can be invoked from a variety of external environments, including ADO for Visual Basic and VBScript, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Office, the Java Data Base Connector (JDBC), and the new XML Provider for MCP systems. |

Physical File Design for DMSII Databases (MCP-4025) | |
Abstract |
The DASDL schema compiler automatically calculates physical file
attributes (record size, block size, area size, etc.) for each
structure in an Enterprise Database Server (DMSII) data base. These
defaults are sometimes acceptable, but almost never optimal.
Specifying values for selected attributes can often have a major
impact on the performance and resource consumption of DMSII data
bases.
The speaker will describe the physical file formats for the most common DMSII structures -- Standard fixed-format data sets, Standard variable-format data sets, Random data sets, and Index Sequential sets. He will describe how attributes specified in DASDL can affect the physical layout of these types of structures, discuss some of the design trade-offs involved, illustrate the concepts with sample cases, and present a spreadsheet tool that aids in performing the necessary design calculations. |
